Cave of the Hundred Horses
The Cave of the Hundred Horses is located within the Alcantara River Park.
The cave, located in the Mitogio district, is an example of a large volcanic cave. The name of the cave is linked to the legend of the Queen Joan of Aragon and her hundred knights . It can be reached via a path along the banks of the Alcantara river which, from the “Al Quatar” bridge, climbs the mountain along the San Cataldo stream.
It is interesting to note the considerable differences that are observed between the two sides of the river, due to the presence of soils of completely different genesis. The left side, with the exception of the Mojo cone, is made up of sedimentary soils while the right side, affected by various lava flows, has evident morphological forms due to the interaction between the river system and the volcanites.
On the right side of the Alcantara River, the Via delle Grotte is a route suitable for mountain bikes that allows you to enjoy, within a single circuit, both the lunar environments created by the lava flows, and the fascinating caves formed during the various eruptions of Etna . The route, which has a length of 50 km, starts from the town of Randazzo to reach, at the junction of the Timpa Rossa Refuge, the maximum altitude of 1750 m asl.
