Calatafimi - Segesta

State: TP - Area: Trapani surroundings

Calatafimi - Segesta, a picturesque village lying on a ridge between two hills, is known for the battle of Pianto Romano, thanks to which one of the most glorious pages of the Italian Risorgimento was written.
In its territory there is the archaeological park of Segesta, so important to the point that, in 1997, the term Segesta was added to the nomenclature of the city.
It is believed that the original village can be identified with the ancient city of Acesta, built near the Crimiso river, and named by Virgil in the Aeneid. Its name derives from the Arab fortress Qal'at Fîmî, or Euphemius' castle.
The current town is characterized by alleys, courtyards and stairways that are divided into labyrinthine and tortuous paths, clearly of Islamic origin. Each of these places retains its own history and meaning, some alleys recall the heroic deeds of Garibaldi, others popular traditions, still others the history, symbols and folklore of this city.
