Archaeological Park of Lilibeo in Marsala
The Archaeological Park of Lilibeo in Marsala extends over Capo Boeo , lapped on one side by the sea of western Sicily.
The archaeological park of Lilibeo extends over 28 hectares and occupies the area where Lilibeo once stood, first an ancient Carthaginian city, and later a Roman one. This was founded following the exodus of the survivors of Mozia, the nearby island that was brutally destroyed in 397 BC. by Dionisio, the tyrant of Syracuse.
Some finds from the Punic era have emerged in the area such as walls of houses, tombs, remains of fortifications; numerous Roman testimonies such as the Roman insula, the late 2nd century AD villa, and the maximum decumanus, the great road in use until the 4th century AD; wonders of art such as the Venus Callipige , a marble statue from the 2nd century BC kept in the museum of the archaeological park of Baglio Anselmi; an ancient hypogeum, the Grotta della Sibilla , dating back to the century. V AD which is a rare example of conversion of the faith, from a pagan place of worship it was transformed into a baptistery.
Inside the area is the Archaeological Museum of Baglio Anselmi .
