Nubia Tower in Paceco
The Tower of Nubia is a sixteenth-century watchtower that stands in the Culcasi salt pan, within the Trapani and Paceco Saline Nature Reserve.
It was built in the sixteenth century on the remains of an ancientmanzil , a small Arab farmhouse. It is believed that it was initially used for spotting tuna inside a trap. When, in 1585, it was renovated by the Florentine architect Camillo Camilliani, the tower became part of the defense system of the Sicilian coast wanted by the Spanish government. The site where the tower stands is in fact a strategic point for the control of a very vast territory that extends from the port of Trapani to the coast, the salt pans and the countryside.
The tower, approximately 14 meters high, has a It is square and is divided into three floors reachable by an external staircase: the ground floor, which was originally used as a powder room was later converted into a cistern for collecting rainwater; on the first floor there was the accommodation of the lookouts; the artillery was positioned on the terrace, accessed via a trapdoor.
