Vita
Things to do, attractions, interesting facts
State: TP - Area: Trapani surroundings
Vita is a small village, the smallest in the province of Trapani, located in the Sicilian hinterland, between the Baronia and San Giuseppe mountains.
Its territory has been inhabited since remote times: it is certain that in these lands the Elymians settled, given the presence of the nearby archaeological sites of Segesta and Selinunte. The history of the current town began in 1607, when its founder, Vito Sicomo, a nobleman from Calatafimi, began to build the first houses around an ancient farmhouse of medieval origin.
Marking the history of this village was the terrible earthquake of 1968 which destroyed many homes and several churches, including the mother church, symbol of the community's identity. The reconstruction took place in a new urban area, adjacent to the old one, and in the historic center there are still large depopulated areas, occupied only by the ruins of ancient buildings.
