The Caper of the Aeolian Islands PDO is a centuries-old excellence of the island of Salina, the green pearl of the Aeolian archipelago. The caper is the pride of local food and wine and with its perfume and intense aroma it is present in many typical dishes of the Aeolian Islands.
The caper is native to North Africa and some areas of Asia and grows spontaneously throughout the Mediterranean area. On the island of Salina it has found a particularly suitable habitat thanks to the mild and windy climate. The cultivation of the caper in the Aeolian Islands is very ancient: it is mentioned starting from the seventeenth century with the name of Caper of the Aeolian Islands in merchant correspondence when large loads of capers were added to shipments of Malvasia, a wine obtained from main grape of the Aeolian Islands.
