The history of wine in Sicily is long and important since ancient times: viticulture was introduced by the Greeks in the eighth century BC. but it is believed that the vine grew spontaneously in Sicily in even more remote times.
Sicily boasts fine wines with a very ancient history such as Marsala, fragrant dessert wines such as Passito di Pantelleria and Malvasia delle Lipari, Moscato of Noto and Syracuse, the large and valuable production of wines from the Belice Valley area, the robust red wines and interesting white wines from the Etna area.
These and many other wines constitute the great oenological treasure of the Sicily and have also made the native grapes famous: Grillo, Catarratto, Inzolia, Zibibbo, Malvasia and Nero d'Avola.
